Type: Silver coin, so-called penny.

Use: Means of payment.

Site: Raisio, Tuomala hoard (1835).

Period: Viking Age.

Dating: 997-1003 A.D.

Size: Diameter 20 mm.

Weight: 1.65 g.

Photographer: Antti Huittinen.

 

Most of the Viking-Age coin hoards from the Finnish mainland date from the 11th century. Some 4,000 coins have been found, of which about 1,000 are English. Most English coins, like this, are from the reign of Ethelred the Unready (978-1016). This coin was struck in Canterbury.
