SILVER COIN (MV s.n.*/MLDP9802)

Type: Silver coin, so-called penny.

Use: Means of payment.

Site: Raisio, Tuomala hoard (1835).

Period: Viking Age.

Dating: 1003-1009 A.D.

Size: Diameter 19 mm.

Weight: 134 g.

Photographer: Antti Huittinen.

This coin is English and has been issued during the reign of Ethelred the Unready (978-1016) in Chester. On the obverse side, the king is shown with a helmet in his head. This image tells us, however, nothing about the helmets of that day, for the design is copied from a Roman coin.
