Type: Silver coin, so-called penny.

Use: Means of payment.

Site: Raisio, Tuomala hoard (1835).

Period: Viking Age.

Dating: Early 11th century A.D.

Size: Diameter 18 mm. (half)

Weight: 1.01 g.

Photographer: Antti Huittinen.

 

This coin was issued in Brussels which in that time belonged to the Holy Roman Empire. On the obverse there is a cross motif (not clearly visible) and on the reverse can be seen the beginning of the name of the city, BRVOC - -. Among the ca. 3,000 German coins found in Finland there are half a dozen from Brussels.
