PINE-BARK PIT AND BIRCH-BARK PIT (TYA 282: 18)

Type: A sooty pit probably for smoke-cure of food or tanning of leather.

Site: Raisio, Ihala, Mulli abode.

Period: Viking Age / Crusade Age / Early Middle Ages.

Dating: 980-1220 A.D.

Photographer: Taina Pietikäinen.

Direction of photography: From north.

In the eastern profile of the excavation area, different historical layers are visible. The strong light-grey stripe is probably a clay floor. In the right border of the picture, a pit can be seen (unit 7302). Its edges and bottom were covered with pine-bark. The pit seen on the left was probably a hearth; its location was already excavated to the bottom when the picture was taken. Under it, a birch-bark layer was discovered. Probably these pits were for smoke-cure of food or tanning of leather.
