1912 - Tigerstedt < back to top
Thanks to a series of inventions associated with bringing sound to the
world of film that he made at the
beginning of the twentieth century, Eric Tigerstedt is widely considered one
of Finland's most talented
inventors ever. Tigerstedt lodged a total of 71 patents in numerous
countries between 1912 and 1924.
Tigerstedt got the inspiration for his ideas during a presentation of the
new motion picture technology
developed by the Lumière brothers held in Helsinki in summer 1896, only six
months after its first
première in Paris. Tigerstedt's dream was to bring sound to Lumière's silent
pictures, and his film, Word
and Picture, which was presented to a gathering of scientific worthies in
Berlin in 1914, was the world's
first successful 'talking picture'. Although his technology was never
commercialized, he went on to
develop the triode and directional loudspeakers.
Tigerstedt's ideas also presaged such future inventions as the television
and the mobile phone.
"There will come a time," he wrote in his diary, "when people will be able
to sit at home and follow
events around the world through a piece of equipment that I refer to as the
electric eye." And in 1917,
he lodged a patent for what he described as a "pocket-size, folding
telephone with a very thin carbon
microphone".

1990 - Octamed Soundstudio < back to top
Some very welcome news was posted by RBF Software on the OctaMED-Amiga mailing list recently that the Amiga version of OctaMED SoundStudio, arguably one of the best music creation tools ever, has just received a (very) long overdue update. However, before you get too excited, this is only a minor update which involves a clean up of the code, some bug fixes and a re-compile for 68020 processors and above. Although the update does not contain anything new feature-wise, it does give hope to those that still use the Amiga version of OctaMED SoundStudio that new features will eventually be added as work continues.

1994 - Hybrid Graphics < back to top
Hybrid Graphics has been developing commercial software rasterizers and visibility optimization software since 1994. Hybrid dPVS? is a library for real time 3D visibility determination. Based on Hybrid's Umbra? technology, dPVS? enables that only the things that are seen in a world will be drawn. This makes the creation of infinitely more complex and dynamic environments possible. Because the optimization is dynamic, the world can be changed during gameplay. Whether it means constructing new buildings on the fly or blowing up existing ones or both is entirely up to the game designer to decide.

1996 - Sensor SC < back to top
Sensor SC was established in to be a forerunner in utilizing Java technologies and providing high-quality software solutions to customers in the telecommunication business. Today, we have a profound and versatile competence that still leaves space for innovation and creativity. *Nesticus* is a powerful Web application development tool based on Java and servlet technologies. It allows UI designers to design HTML pages with any HTML editor and Java developers to use any Java IDE to implement application logic to the Web pages. Nesticus then converts HTML pages into Java code and finally integrates the entire application without any need for manual integration. Nesticus supports also multi-channel UIs, thus making it easy to develop multi-channel applications just by redesigning the UI.
2001 - World Talk Finnish-Eurotalk < back to top
This is the first time I have ever been so excited about learning a language. I've tried using just about every other method to learn Finnish (except actually going and living in Finland.) I tried out this program for the first time today and it measures up. The plusses of the program is that you can get English instructions easily if you need them (a safety net) but otherwise the program immerses you into the language. The program feels like you are playing a game but the stinky trick is you are actually learning at the same time (awesome!). The only minus is that I have yet to find a quit button on the World Talk Finnish program (but I tend not to be overly observant or patient) and the Talk Now program had better graphics. Mind you my experience with the Talk Now program is more extensive, but the World Talk program definitely reaches par. Using this program is the best way to learn especially if you have difficulty learning languages using books and tapes and don't have the luxury in enrolling in a Finnish language course.
Thank you for your time! We apologize that not all of the information is referenced to it's original source.
