Fray Bernardino Sahagún (1499-1590)


A Franciscan priest and researcher of the Mexican culture. His famous volume entitled Historia General de las Cosas de la Nueva España was written between the years of 1570 and 1582. It is considered to be one of the most important sources extant on the subject of pre-hispanic culture. Sahagun spent more than 40 years of his life studying Mexican culture. His writings are direct records of data gathered by native informants. Among the outstanding contributions of this work are the chapters on the flora and fauna of México, information about the medicinal herbs used, and descriptions about the various craftsFeathers practiced by the Mexican people.
