Fray Anton de Montesinos
In the early decades of the 16th Century Fray Montesinos was one of the first to denouce the
abuses being committed by the Spanish settlers on the Indian population. His accusatory sermons,
delivered from the pulpit during Sunday mass, were considered landmarks in the movement
to establish the human rights of the indigenous people.
