"the idea of preparing a study or design of a finished piece of work."66It was not until the late 19th Century, after industrial manufacturing had become an established model for production, that the idea of design as the preparation of templates for longer runs of objects surfaced. This concept further evolved during the 20th Century into the modern proposition of design as "a problem solving activity lodged somewhere between art and science".67It was also in the 20th Century that design became firmly associated with industry and clearly distinguished from art and craft.6 8

If art is an activity whose end products result from the engagement between many actors in a given community, in the context of this study, design is also an activity that involves the interaction of actors who form a community concerned with the systematic planning and execution of objects, such as concepts and products, that may, or may not, be art. There is a simultaneous distinction and connection between both terms. For although the production of art, at some point or another must include design, art does not have to be an end result of the process of design. This community that comes together with the intent of creating something and can be seen as a communication network that is established for the purposes of bringing forth the essence of the concept, the product, or the artefact.6 9It could be reasoned that communication devices such as these can be used to construct dynamic and communal design processes.7 0

Though in the recent past, there has been a tendency to view design as an activity that is involved mostly in problem solving, it does not make sense to analyse it solely in these terms. For it has been noted that, "designs are invented rather than discovered,
