In March nobody will have to stay awake alone

During March Finnish night birds will be able to take care of TV-pets, Ari and Eira. They live in their own apartments behind the TV screen. Both have come to the point where they need care and attention. Viewers can take care of them via telephone. Ari's and Eira's nature will be modelled according to the treatment they receive.

Aquarium is an interactive TV series that progresses in real time in the heart of the night. Former share-broker Ari eats, drinks, parties and gets sentimental. But he can't sleep and therefore in the daytime he is useless.

Primary school teacher Eira wakes every night at one o'clock precisely. She prepares the next day's tasks, tinkers about, sows, bakes and plays the harp. The impulses sent by viewers stimulate Eira and Ari to act, but do not necessarily force them to do so.

The aim of the programme is to get Finnish night birds to collectively care for and develop the 'pet' characters. The joint project runs also at the Internet address, www.akvaario.net, at which viewers can keep a 'night diary'. It reflects the collective state of mind of the viewers and their interpretations of the development of the characters themselves.

Aquarium can be seen during March, six nights per week when normal broadcasts on YLE's TV1 come to an end. Eira can be taken care of via the number 0700-88700 and Ari can be affected via 0700-88701. The price of the calls is 1.90mk + local call charges. Aquarium is a joint production of the Media Lab at the University of Art and Design Helsinki with the YLE Radio and TV Institute's (RTI) Media Workshop.
