Master Class in interaction design
interactionmasters.uiah.fi Interaction design is rapidly becoming a central consideration in new media design and development. Expanding the notions and practices of usability and interface design, interaction design addresses and emphasises the qualities of user experience. The field of interaction design involves the development of dynamic, dramatic and rich media interfaces by using a variety of approaches from the arts and programming - but also a deeper understanding of the contexts and cultures of media use. In Winter 2001-02, the UIAH Center of Expertise for New Media organizes a master class in interaction design. The master class aims at developing professional agendas for interaction design and at opening up challenging views to the potentials of experience design. The master class combines lectures and demos with a peer-to-peer workshop mode. The tutors are international and Finnish experts of the field, and their topics cover dynamic/generative, audio/visual as well as emotional/contextual aspects of interaction design, while addressing a variety of platforms, tools and skills.

Falling Through the Force of Gravity FINAL THESIS EXHIBITION Falling Through the Force of Gravity includes an interactive video installation (the exhibition part) and short film (seeing at final degree presentation at Thu 3th of May 9-10). The work combines dance and documentary to explore how personal history is constructed through physical memories and photographs. Using photographs to reconstruct corporeal memories, the dancers Pia Lindy and Fatou Traore seek physical approaches to their past. The work deals with the collisions between visual and corporeal memory and with the unpleasant feeling of not recognizing oneself in a photograph. Interactive video installation: By stepping on the footprints in front of the video screen, the audience can control the dancers' movements. The choreography changes in rhythm with the visitor's jumps. But the control cuts both ways; the visitor may think of the dancers as a marionettes to move about, but also the installation has control over the visitor's movements. ................ Cultural Usability seminar 24.4.01 Cultural Usability seminar LUME Center, Sampo auditorium April 24, 2001 10 am - 5 pmParticipation is free, but please register online by Monday, April 23 noon! The seminar language is English, with simultaneous translation into sign language. Cultural Usability is a preliminary research project funded by the University of Art and Design Helsinki UIAH and carried out at the university's Media Lab. The research looks for critical approaches to new media design by creating exchanges between cultural studies, sociology of technology, design research and technology development. 'Cultural usability' is a working hypothesis for a design practice that takes into account the larger socio-cultural context of use, reaching beyond the functional interests of contemporary usability research and interface development. The public seminar presents some of the approaches developed within the research, which is published on the web. The aim is to activate critical discussion of technology development and design, to which the seminar's invited speakers have significantly contributed. The seminar is targeted to researchers, students and practitioners of new media and technology. Admission free of charge. ................ CIATV 2001 meeting in the Media Lab European concept development for interactive multimedia - CIATV working meeting in the Media Lab UIAH 19.-24.4.01. CIATV is supported by the Media2 programme. Please go to see the info on previous meetings. ................ Pockets full of Memories 18.4. in Paris "Pockets full of Memories" is an online and museum installation in which the audience creates an archive by scanning an object in their possession at the time of the exhibition visit. These items and their descriptions are entered into a continuously growing database. The sum of the archive of objects, organized through a neural-net based self-organizing map algorithm, is to be projected on a large gallery wall and the audience will be able to interact, regroup, and reformulate relationships through terminals in the exhbition space. The exhibition/archive's aim is to explore digital data.structures as a site of collective memory, reflect the diversity and make-up of the audience: who they are, what they are interested in, how they describe themselves represented through the objects donated to the archive, and to make accessible and understandable how advanced datastructures function. The exhibition is realized in collaboration with medialab at the University of Arts and Design Helsinki (Kohonen self-organizing map algorithm - Timo Honkela, Timo Koskenniemi, Petri Saarikko; Media Lab) and c3 center for Culture and Communication, Budapest (touchscreen data collection, online and gallery interaction hardware and projection software). Design by projekttriangle, Stuttgart. Support by Langlois Foundation for Arts, Media and Technology, Montreal, Canada. Opening in the Georges Pompidou Center, Paris, on 18.4.01 Pls go to see George Legrady's text and Projekttriangle's exhibition site................. F2F: NEW MEDIA ART FROM FINLAND
CONTINUES ITS US TOUR IN WASHINGTON D.C. F2F: New Media Art from Finland exhibition started its US tour in Los Angeles last fall. From February 5 through March 3, the exhibition will be open in Washington D.C. at the Embassy of Finland, 3301 Massachusetts Avenue, NW.
The exhibition displays interactive installations from nine media
artists. The featured artists and their works are: Tuomo Tammenpää has a background in photography and graphic design. He holds a B.A. in Photography from the University of Arts and Design, Helsinki (UIAH), and an M.A. in Photography and Interactive Art from the UIAH Media Lab. During the 1990s he has participated in several exhibitions in Finland, Scandinavia and Central Europe with video and media installations. At the moment, Tuomo works as the Creative Director in the Mindworks Ltd., a Helsinki-based digital design production company.
ABOUT NEED The NEED project, presented in F2F exhibition, is an online project that can be experienced independently in the internet. Visiting the exhibition further enhances the participatory experience. NEED is a perfect brand, there is no product, just the image. Need is a test environment for exploring brand building and consumer culture in western societies. The Need project was inspired by the observation that marketing awakens artificial needs and desires in people. In the F2F exhibition, the installation is a showroom type "shop-in gallery". Need package design samples are promoted in a bright and clinical space. A computer panel with direct connection to the Needweb is mounted on the central cabin of the shop. This is the main interactive component for audience participation in the exhibition installation. NEED is produced by Mindworks Ltd. and supported by AVEK, The Promotion Center for Audiovisual Culture in Finland, Grafia ry and Westlux Ltd. Finland.

Sinikka Alanko retires from Media Lab as of 1.2.2001 This is to inform you all that Sinikka Alanko has now officially retired from duty here in the Media Lab as of 1.2.2001. As most of you will know Sinikka has been Amanuenssi here since the lab was formed in the early 1990s. Prior to this she was employed in UIAH Koulutuskeskus. In 1999 Sinikka had a serious accident in the late Summer which resulted in some permanent damage to her arm. Her premature retirement is as a result of these injuries. I would like to thank Sinikka for all the work she has done within the lab during the 1990s. She was a great personal support for me, especially in the early years when my management expertise was often in need of improvement, as well as being a great believer in openness and democratic processes in the lab's day to day business. Sinikka helped me to unravel the mysteries of the UIAH financial reporting system and acted as my go-between on many occassions in dealings with 6th floor. She has also been a strong campaigner for the improvement of our physical environment here. Although it is sad to see Sinikka leave I think that we must also be very happy for her in her new life on the shores of Saimaa to where she moved in December with husband Kalle and her two cats. As we grit our teeth here in the stress of work and look out on slush-covered Hämeentie one can feel a little jealous of Sinikka's new environment in the peace and solitude of a real Finnish idyll. On behalf of all staff and students of the Media Lab I'd like to thank Sinikka for all her hard work here and wish her all the best of luck and happiness for the future.
