AWARE IN AMSTERDAM

A Media Lab based project AWARE is selected for e-culture fair in Amsterdam, 23rd - 24th October 2003.

Organised by the Virtueel Platform (a network for cooperation and policy in the field of new media and culture in Nederlands) the e-culture fair is a unique event which brings together 35 european research projects that cross the boundaries between culture, industry, education and science. To demo alternative approaches to ways of living, communicating, learning and working, the emphasis of the fair is upon hands-on activities and the visitors to the fair are challenged to test out the prototypes on offer.

The 'aware' platform [http://aware.uiah.fi/] was selected to take part in the e-culture fair. The linked text describes the project and indicates the plan for the event.

NEW PROJECTS ON LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS

The Learning Environments for Progressive Inquiry research group has two new projects:

1. YDC/WATER - "Young Digital Creator / Our Sound of Our Water" funded by UNESCO; and

2. UNIVe - "Creating network-based e-university model for the small countries in the context of e-learning in Europe" funded by Europe Union's Socrates programme (Minerva).

YDC/WATER PROJECT

YDC/WATER is one of the Young Digital Creators programmes, which is a UNESCO web-based initiative that invites young people of different cultures to express their creative minds with digital tools and connect with each other in exploring issues of our society.

The participants will be actively engaged in the programme from the start by recording sound clips related to water. These sound clips will be saved on the web-based sound bank for use of all the participants. In order to continue to creative production of digital water songs, the procedure of browsing and listening to different soundtracks from the audio clip database, which are made by the other participants, will be equally essential.

With the selection of favourite sound clips, the young digital creators will be able to explore creative editing and mixing and compose their own "water song", "water soundscape". These artistic audio pieces will also be uploaded to the web-based database, where there will be an archive of collected creative productions.

The creative experience will be a shared one, as the participant will be requested to listen to other water music pieces and to discuss the pieces with the other participants on the online community website.

The YDC/Water project is recycling the Tram-n-Bus concept (http://tram-n-bus.uiah.fi/) originally developed by the Media Lab students Alexander Budde, Kiia Kallio, Mari Keski-Korsu, Mika Meskanen Aleksi Nuuja and Riikka Puustinen.

UNIVe PROJECT

UNIVe project is aiming at achieving the following specific objectives:

1) to implement the outcomes of 9 independent projects in 6 core e-learning areas; 2) to develop the model of small state e-university;
3) to launch a series of integrated pilot projects in the frames of the model;
4) to make this innovative and integrated type of e-university model available for the wider community.

The target groups of UNIVe are: groups related to the test-country Estonia (learners, teaching and supporting staff; universities; decision makers); potential users of the developed small state e-university model (other states and universities) and European universities covered by the project network and relevant parties in the field of ODL and ICT.

Study project Immediate, DL 11.5.

Something is happening.
How to report?
How to document?
How to portray?

Immediate is a rich media publishing concept for collaborative journalism in the context of digital media. The project aims at exploring the possibilities of the concept through a prototyping process resulting in an experimental end product (DVD, web based, streaming, broadcasting). As the content and the context of this experiment we will utilise the conference The Good, The Bad and The Irrelevant, dealing with the user and the design of information and communication technologies.

To meet interesting people, to develop and test a process of rapid production in a compact context and to explore the possibilities and limitations of the digital media, join the Immediate crew.

Themes

The trans-disciplinary Immediate project will develop concepts through three main design approaches to collaborative journalism and publishing:
- Reporting: concepts related to time and quickly available daily summaries of events. Keywords: news coverage, time-based, dynamic, accumulating.
- Documenting: concepts related to descriptive and ambient documentation of the official and unofficial events in a space. Keywords: memory, process, space, personalised.
- Portraying: concepts related to in depth interviews with interesting people and challenging characters. Keywords: focus, people, navigable.

Resources

For your production you will have training and access to LUME and Media Lab facilities (TV and film studios, digital authoring equipment and computer facilities).

Schedule

The project consists of a number of introductory lectures and planning and tutoring sessions during the following days: 20-21 May, 3-4 June, 12 June and 19 August in the afternoons. Place: Media Lab, 4th floor, University of Art and Design Helsinki.

Please note that you are expected to work in teams also between the official meetings.

The students will implement their developed concepts during an intensive five-day production period 1-5 September 2003 in the context of the conference "The Good, The Bad and The Irrelevant" taking place in the Media Centre Lume, University of Art and Design Helsinki.

A short and intensive post-production period will follow immediately after the event (September) and the final results will be presented in the Media Lab Demo Day in December.

Credits

The number of credits you can expect from the active participation (80% presence during the sessions and a completed production) in the development of Immediate is 4-5.

The acceptance of Immediate related credits as part of the student's degree is a matter to be negotiated between the student and his/her home department. JOO agreement can be used for students outside UIAH.

Requirements

We expect from you
- Current enrolment in a masters level degree programme
- Open mind, skills in communication and collaboration
- Experience in working with digital media is recommended
- Fluent spoken and written English

Applications

Please send your applications as soon as possible but before 11 May 2003 to the following email address: immediate(a-T)uiah.fi and they should contain the following information:

As the subject of the message please enter: your name / application In the body of the message please mention:

Good / Bad / Irrelevant

Media Lab and ARKI will be hosting an international conference with the COST 269 network in LUME in 3-5 September 2003. We hope this will bring many interesting people to Helsinki and give great opportunities to show, see, do and discuss for everyone concerned.

Please also consider sending an abstract for a paper to the Good/Bad/Irrelevant conference - the deadline is the 10th or April.

The call for papers and other information is available at the official COST 269 conference site (http://www.cost269.org/conference.html) and our own conference site (http://goodbad.uiah.fi) - here as html, word and pdf formats.

Our application procedure has been updated 22.1.03. Please note that the applications should be delivered by the end of February this year. ................

The latest award

The Media Lab UIAH has been proposed for the Educational Top Unit award. First of all a big thank you to those that helped and worked on the application - it was great teamwork. But, of course, the application was only trying to communicate the realities of our MA education here in the Lab, the efforts we've made to tackle a new field of study and a new professional field of creative production during the last years as well as our efforts to introduce new pedagogical thinking and practice in general. So my thanks goes to all of you for the work you've done in the last years. This award will ensure that we can continue to develop the Lab's education in 2004-06.

In addition to the Lab's award TaiK/UIAH also was proposed for the Artistic Top Unit (Department of Spatial and Furniture Design) and Adult Education Top Unit (Centre for extended Studies).
