Background

During the last years, research in the area of analysis and design of interactive media and interaction technologies has got a lot of attention in Nordic national research programs, which has led to a proliferation of new research projects and increasing national networking. In 1998, these developments found a Nordic dimension in a series of meetings and discussions between nodes in Malmö, Gothenburg, Aalborg, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo, Bergen and Helsinki; and a Nordic network in interactive multimedia research started to take shape.

The Nordic Interactive Multimedia Research School is the central forum of this emerging network. Organized twice a year, the Research school workshop is open for Ph.D. students and others engaged in research coming from a wide spectrum of backgrounds, from computer science to humanities, art and design.

The first workshop of the research school (Malmö, November 1998) was jointly organized by Interactive Institute-Malmö, Art and Communication, Malmö University College, and InterMedia-Aalborg, Aalborg University. Titled "The Staging of Time, Space and Interactivity", the successful workshop brought together a broad range of researchers for lively discussions.

Helsinki: "In Terms of Design"

The second workshop, hosted by the University of Art and Design, will take place in Helsinki in May 28-30, 1999. The theme of the Helsinki workshop, In Terms of Design, manifests the central role of designers in the development of media environments and aims at charting the changing terrain of interactive multimedia research and design.

In recent Scandinavian discussions, the need for new perspectives towards interactive media has been evident in proposing new agendas and names - such as new informatics, humanist informatics, and digital cultural studies - for existing disciplines. Common nominators to these new disciplines seem to include an emphasis on social and aesthetic aspects of media technology, as well as a culture and design oriented understanding of the 'user'.

From the technological point of view, new areas and paradigms of computing - affective computing, neural and evolutionary learning systems, wireless communications, virtual reality and wearable computers - extend and challenge the traditional notions of human computer interaction and present complex questions for designers.

In the context of these developments, the Helsinki workshop welcomes participants who share an interest in interactive multimedia research and the reflective and critical practice of design. Of particular interest are issues dealing with:
* Media design research. How should the design process be framed and conceptualized? What kind of relevance do contextual, participatory, and constructivist approaches have for interactive multimedia design?
* Cultural and social aspects of technology. How to overcome the culture/technology divide in interactive media development? What are the values and ideologies involved in interactive media design?
* Emotions and subjectivity vs. design and computation. Is there a need to model users' emotions? Can systems become affective? How is subjectivity taken into account in interface design?
* Content and context. How to find a balance between the contextual and the generic aspects of design? How should content be defined in terms of interaction?

The Helsinki workshop will be hosted by the Media Lab at the University of Art and Design Helsinki UIAH. The Media Lab runs a MA programme in New Media, doctoral studies as well as research and development projects in the evolving digital environments, including interactive television, game design, and digital museum design. The Media Lab fosters a broad interest in digital culture, technology and design exemplified by the multidisciplinary backgrounds of its students and researchers and by an ongoing dialogue between various approaches to interactive media design. For an overview of research interests in UIAH, see the university's electronic magazine art2, special issue on Design Research: Consuming/Media.

Submissions

The Helsinki workshop welcomes participants - doctoral students, researchers and practitioners - from the fields of art, design, science and technology to submit papers and project presentations that relate to the workshop themes. All participants are expected to submit a position statement (1-3 pages) describing their project or research interest. Participants will be divided into working groups based on these submissions, and will get reviews and comments from other participants and faculty members.

If you want to participate in the workshop, please send your position statement by April 1, via e-mail to:

Nimres2@mlab.uiah.fi

in plain (ascii) form. You may, however, include web addresses that give relevant background information or demonstrate your work. The abstracts are intended to be available in the web for the participants only, and their status is thus clearly that of a working paper. In addition, we ask you to include 3-5 keywords or phrases that best summarize your main areas of interest. Please be rather specific.

In summary, the position statement e-mail should include:
* your name, affiliation, surface mail address, e-mail address
* 3-5 keywords or phrases for the identification of main points
* 1-3 page plain text description of your work and interest
* reference and potentially www links to your work or background information
