EASTER IN CARUPANO, VENEZUELA

An Exhibition 15.4-15.6.2000 at the Helinä Rautavaara Museum

Welcome to a trip to the shores of the Caribbean sea to experience the celebration of Easter in the city of Carúpano, Venezuela.

Students and researchers from the department of anthropology of the University of Helsinki, and the Media Lab of the University of Art and Design Helsinki, with the support of the Finnish Anthropological Society and the Helinä Rautavaara Museum, have collaborated in the creation of this exciting exhibition, "Semana Santa - Easter in Carúpano, Venezuela."

The exhibition is built from materials gathered by students and researchers from the department of anthropology of the University of Helsinki during a field trip to Carúpano in Easter of 1999. The exhibition is designed and produced as a joint project between students from the Media Lab of the University of Art and Design Helsinki led by researcher and doctoral student Lily Díaz, and students from the department of anthropology, led by docent Eija-Maija Kotilainen, and FT Ilkka Ruohonen.

The exhibition is based on the celebrations of Easter in the city of Carúpano. These comprise the structured rituals organized by the Catholic church for the Easter celebration, and the times of relaxation spent together with family and friends during vacation time. The exhibition builds on the following themes: home and dwelling space, market, Catholic week, synchretist beliefs, and free time at the beach.

The exhibition has three central elements. A traditional exhibition of captioned photographs is one of these elements. In addition a mediascape that comprises multimedia stations and a sound environment takes the guests through reconstructions of the Home, Supermarket, Esoteric shop, Church and Plaza, and the Beach. In these stations, media items such as digital video, interactive panoramas and multimedia presentations, have been placed to offer the guest an immersive, engaging experience. The sound environment has been designed and produced by Perttu Hämäläinen with the support of Audio Riders, Oy.

The exhibition has also produced a publication "Semana Santa - Easter in Carúpano, Venezuela: a travel guide to the exhibition." This guide is meant to provide additional imformation about the exhibition, its contents and the project in general. Additional information can also be found at the project's web pages: http://mlab.uiah.fi/displayculture/.
