FALLING THROUGH THE FORCE OF GRAVITY

Premiere at the Avanto festival on Sunday 12.11.2000 at 16.00 in the Kiasma theatre.

The dance-installation exhibited recently at Continent - New Media Art exhibition is followed by another related piece, a hypnotic short movie about past unrest.

Four memories of dancer Pia Lindy are incarnated in the form of choreographies at the National Museum. The dancer recalls events from her past that still obsess her physical memory. Naughty "memories" sabotage the solemn museum space and quarrel with each other. They are angels, who play tricks with people's minds. Each have their own story to tell.

Director: Hanna Haaslahti (Media Lab)
Dance & choreographies: Pia Lindy
Music: Circle, Ektroverde, Lehtisalofamily & Einstürzende Neubauten

Multimedia for the National Museum

UIAH Media Lab has produced the multimedia solution for the Finnish National Museum, which will open again for the public on July 7, 2000 after a long period of renovation.

The work realized by the Media Lab consists of designing the overall multimedia concept and networked solution, through which parts of the programmes can be updated by the museum staff. In addition, the Media Lab designed and produced 4 local multimedia programmes, the first ones in the museum's plans for an extensive series of exhibition multimedia.

The main design issues related to finding a balance between the informative and the experiential in the programmes, as well as to providing context for the objects presented in the exhibition, keeping in mind the varied interests of the museum visitors.

The collaboration with the National Museum started already in 1996-98, as part of the study project on Digital Archeology and Museum Design. This work produced initial proposals and concepts for and was followed by preliminary planning and concept design in 1998-99 and the actual design and production in 1999-2000.

Lepakko - CavePeople

This CD-Rom tells the story of Lepakkoluola aka. Batcave, a paint warehouse in Helsinki, Finland, which became known for various reasons, by various names. Alternative Helsinki youth occupied the building in 1979 and made Lepakkoluola known as an independent cultural centre. But before Lepakko the same building was known as Hotel Flame, where homeless alcoholics lived and died. And before that there was just a building with no name, a paint warehouse beyond the city centre.

This CD-Rom presents Lepakkoluola as something more than a mere building. Lepakkoluola was a state of mind, which generated many rock bands and even the oldest private radio station in Finland. 'Lepakko CavePeople', therefore is not a game, nor is it an educational multimedia show to be screened in museums. This CD-Rom mixes documentation with sensation - it is something for the user to make sense of and discover.

Launch date: 11.4.2000. Production group: Mediaosuuskunta Muuntaja COOP / Mia Mäkelä, Timo Viikari, Tomi Knuutila (Media Lab UIAH), Otto Mattson, Miska Rantanen. Published by WSOY.
